Descrizione
Located on the Pancrazio hill the castle has a very ancient history. It was originally built by the Byzantines to defend themselves against the continuous Saracens raids, around 937AD. It was later rebuilt by Roger the Norman in 1132 and finally restored by Frederick II of Swabia around 1240. Under the Angevins the fortress became a royal residence. It was destroyed by earthquakes several times over the centuries. The castle is now undergoing restoration.
