Located on a rocky promontory overlooking the old neighbourhood of S. Teodoro the castle was probably built by the Byzantines in the 9th century in order to accommodate the military garrison and protect the surrounding territory against Lombard raid. According to some historians the castle dates back to the Norman era. It underwent several expansions in later times. The castle was damaged by the earthquakes of 1609, 1638 and 1783. All that remains of it are the great towers and perimeter wall |
